About

Farmer Deb

About

Deb Howard
Deb Howard, aka “Farmer Deb”, is the owner and manager of the Willapa Bay Heritage Farm.

Daughter of a career Naval aviator, Harlan, and his wife, Lyddia, Deb moved to the Peninsula in 2017 after years of looking for a farming property.

Working her day job at a Fortune 50 company to afford her hobby farm habit, Deb appreciates working in the dirt and spending time with her chickens and goats.

Our

legacy
The Willapa Bay Heritage Farm is dedicated to Deb’s family of farmers going back five generations, but in particular the memory of her maternal grandparents, Alice and Gregory Ptitsin, who met at Washington State University marrying September 1st, 1929.

A wheat farming clan from central Washington, Alice’s family settled in Washington pre-statehood while Gregory was an immigrant from Russia who lost his family holdings in the Russian Revolution. With a degree in horticulture from the University of Kiev, Gregory loved his dahlias and magnolia trees.

He grew football-size spider chrysanthemums and used tweezers to pull weeds from his near-perfect dichondra lawn.

After they became widowed in 2009 (Harlan) and 2010 (Deb), Deb moved Harlan to Santa Cruz from his home on Vashon Island, WA where he had lived with Lyddia for over 22 years.

After searching up and down the coast of California, Oregon and Washington for a farm property, Deb and Harlan moved from Santa Cruz to this farm October 23rd (Deb's grandmother's birthday!) where they lived with Osita the Wonder Dog until her demise October 25th, 2021. They now live with their chickens and goats and their latest rescue dog, Maylie, who arrived October 30th, 2021. For more info on the farm menagerie, see our Cast of Characters page
